Dear district Rotary Foundation chairs and grants, scholarships, and vocational training team subcommittee chairs:

Starting next 1 July, any club or district that applies for a global grant to support a humanitarian project or a vocational training team will be required to conduct a community assessment first and include the results in their grant application. As you work with Rotarians in your district who are planning grant projects, please make sure they know about this part of the application and how the assessment can help them plan an effective project. You might also include the information in upcoming district seminars.

Assessing the strengths, weaknesses, needs, and assets of the community you’re helping is an essential first step in planning an effective project. Not only do assessments lead to projects that have the most meaningful impact. The process itself builds valuable relationships, involves residents in decisions that will shape their communities, and encourages them to participate in making lasting improvements. Most important, projects that are informed by community assessments are more sustainable. And remember, planners can use district grant funds to conduct the assessment.

You can help the Rotarians you work with complete an effective assessment by making sure they have the resources they need. In Rotary’s Community Assessment Tools, they can find ideas and proven methods for assessing a community’s assets and needs, including community meetings, surveys, interviews, and focus groups. They’ll then complete the Global Grants Community Assessment Results form and upload it with the global grant application, found in the Grant Center. We will let you know when it’s available online.

If you have any questions, write to rotarysupportcenter@rotary.org. Thank you for your commitment to Rotary grants and all your work to support the Rotarians who are Doing Good in the World.

Sincerely,

Abby McNear
